Transitional Year Residents
Our Transitional Year residents come from diverse backgrounds and bring unique strengths, passions, and goals to the Spokane Teaching Health Center. Each resident is committed to providing compassionate, high-quality care while gaining broad clinical experience that prepares them for advanced specialty training. Whether headed into fields like radiology, dermatology, or anesthesiology, our residents form a close-knit, collaborative community focused on learning, service, and professional growth during this foundational year.
Adam Crandall, MD
Medical School: University of Washington, School of Medicine
Advanced Specialty: Interventional Radiology
Advanced Specialty Program: University of Utah
Adam is a born-and-raised Idaho spud, having grown up across
the border from Spokane in the lake town of Coeur d'Alene. He
stayed locally for medical school while attending the University of
Washington. He completed most of his medical school clerkships in
Spokane, frequently working with Transitional Year Residents and
learning about the best TY in the country. Adam has three lively
children and an angel of a wife who helps keep the craziness in
check. He enjoys spending as much time with them as possible.
You can also sometimes find him playing a variety of games on
PC/Switch, watching College Football, enjoying the outdoors, or
playing the piano. Adam is reluctantly thrilled to move away from
the Inland Northwest to complete Interventional Radiology
Residency at the University of Utah.
Michael Durka, MD
Medical School: Washington State University Elson S. Floyd School of Medicine

Advanced Specialty Program: University of Washington Affiliate Hospital
Michael is Spokane born and raised. He grew up on a small farm
and studied Biology at Whitworth University and received his MD
from WSU. He is excited to be in his hometown for the next year
and close to his family while completing his medical training. Next
year, he is off to Seattle, WA to study Interventional Radiology at
the University of Washington. When not in the hospital he is an
avid fan of anything outdoors (even if he isn’t good at it), and
enjoys music, reading, pyrography, and coffee. He tends to think
you can never have too many books, and when not reading in a
nook somewhere, if you don’t find him outside, you’ll find him
practicing one of his favorite hobbies, woodworking.
Petr Gaburak, MD

Petr was originally born in Ukraine and after his family immigrated to the U.S., he grew up in Shoreline, Washington. He then moved to Pullman, WA where he earned a bachelor’s in Biology from Washington State University. Petr then gained experience working in dermatology and general surgery before completing his medical training at Washington State University College of Medicine. Outside of work, Petr enjoys exploring the outdoors with his wife, son, and St. Bernard. In addition, he also enjoys playing sports and video games during his free time. Petr looks forward to moving to Sacramento, CA to complete his interventional radiology training at UC Davis.
Hannah Gu, MD
Medical School: Western Michigan University
Advanced Specialty: Anesthesia
Advanced Specialty Program: Brown University
Hannah was born and raised in NY before moving to Ohio prior to
college. She went on to attend The Ohio State University where
she studied biology and computer science. After college, she
relocated to southwest Michigan to attend Western Michigan
University School of Medicine, becoming the first physician in her
family. Outside of the hospital, Hannah enjoys spending time with
her family and friends, hiking, swimming, and cooking. She is
excited to explore all that the Pacific Northwest has to offer before
heading back to the East Coast to begin her anesthesiology
residency at Brown University.
Matthew Hsin, MD

Advanced Specialty Program: University of Washington Affiliate Program
Matthew was raised in Federal Way, WA. He went to college at the
University of Washington before moving to Spokane to complete
medical school at Washington State University. When he is not in
the hospital, he enjoys staying active through various sports,
reading, and playing DOTA 2. He and his childhood friends are
among the top 10% of DOTA 2 players in North America. Matthew
is excited to be back in Spokane before he returns to Seattle next
year to continue his Diagnostic Radiology residency at the
University of Washington.
Ethan Overfelt, MD
Medical School: University of Washington School of Medicine

Advanced Specialty Program: Northwestern McGaw
Ethan is originally from Moscow, Idaho. He attended the University of Idaho to earn his bachelor’s in Biological Engineering and enjoyed leading STEM outreach efforts for Idaho youth. He then spent a year between college and medical school volunteering as an EMT for his local fire department and working as a medical assistant. Ethan attended the University of Washington School of Medicine through the Idaho WWAMI program and was able to rotate clinically throughout the Northwest. Outside of work, he enjoys traveling, reading, trying new restaurants, brewing and drinking coffee, spending time with his wife, and petting as many dogs as possible. Next year, he will begin his training in radiation oncology in Chicago, Illinois at Northwestern.
Logan Patterson, MD
Medical School: Washington State University, Elson S. Floyd School of Medicine
Advanced Specialty: Radiation Oncology
Advanced Specialty Program: UC San Francisco
Logan was raised in Yakima, WA. He attended the University of Pennsylvania’s undergraduate business program and worked as a technology consultant before changing careers and attending Washington State University’s Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine. He is an avid reader, enjoys both tennis and pickleball, and plays a variety of video games. Next year, he will begin his training in radiation oncology at UC San Francisco.
Cole Pennock, MD
Medical School: University of Iowa
Advanced Specialty: Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
Advanced Specialty Program: Undetermined
Cole is originally from Clinton, Iowa. He studied Human Physiology
at the University of Iowa as an undergraduate and played baseball
there prior to an injury, which inspired him to pursue a career in
medicine. He was an EMT during a gap year before medical
school. He completed medical school at the University of Iowa.
Outside of work Cole enjoys playing basketball, working out, and
anything outdoors. He looks forward to exploring the Pacific
Northwest this year and then completing his training in Physical
Medicine and Rehabilitation.
Will Armero, MD
Anesthesia
Will grew up in Connecticut before moving to upstate New York to attend Skidmore College, where he majored in Biochemistry, was a member of the rowing team, and spent countless hours in the pottery studio. In between college and medical school, he worked for a few years as an Anesthesia Technician at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, where he decided he wanted to become an anesthesiologist and attend medical school. He then moved cross country to Los Angeles to receive his M.D. from the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. In his free time, Will likes to spend his time outdoors mountain biking, trail running, skiing, hiking, climbing and pretty much any other activity that gets him out in nature. He also has continued his passion for pottery since college and plans to join a ceramics studio here in Spokane. He looks forward to exploring the PNW this year, embracing winter sports by getting into cross-country and back-country skiing, and experiencing all four seasons before returning back to California to complete his Anesthesiology training at UCSF.
Nicholas Battis, MD
Dermatology
Nicholas is originally from the western suburbs of Minneapolis, MN. He left Minnesota to study Neuroscience at the University of Notre Dame, prior to completing medical school at the University of Minnesota, where he spent his first 2 years in a rural training program in Duluth, MN. He also completed a year-long research fellowship at the Park Nicollet Contact Dermatitis Clinic. He is an avid outdoorsman, spending as much time as possible hiking, biking, skiing, or camping. He is also a huge fan of science fiction and can quote most lines from any piece of Star Wars media on the big or small screen. He is looking forward to experiencing all the PNW has to offer during his intern year before returning home to Minnesota next year to complete a residency in Dermatology at HealthPartners Institute.
Aman Buttar, MD
Radiology
Aman is originally from Renton, just outside of Seattle. He studied physiology at the University of Washington before moving to Spokane to complete medical school at the University of Washington School of Medicine’s regional campus. Outside of the hospital, he enjoys hiking, brewing coffee, spending time at the gym, and playing video games. He is excited to spend the next year in the familiar PNW before leaving for Chicago to complete his Diagnostic Radiology residency at Loyola.
Benjamin Corman, MD
Anesthesia
Ben grew up in Bellevue, WA before moving to Minnesota to earn his degree in Chemistry at Carleton College. After graduating, he moved to Boston where he worked as a research technician at Massachusetts General Hospital and an usher for the Boston Red Sox. He completed medical school and earned his Master of Public Health at Stony Brook University in New York. In his free time, Ben loves playing music, biking, kayaking, and soccer. He is excited to be returning to the Pacific Northwest for his internship and will be completing his residency in Anesthesiology at Brown University.
Ben Gastier, MD
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
Ben grew up on a small family farm in Milan, Ohio, near the shores of Lake Erie. He went on to briefly study mechanical engineering at The Ohio State University before a sports injury led him down the path toward medicine and a degree in Biology. After college, he attended the University of Toledo where he decided to pursue a career in physical medicine and rehabilitation and received his medical degree. Outside of medicine, Ben and his wife, Danica, enjoy hiking and exploring new places with a goal of reaching all 63 national parks together. Ben is an avid fan of Cleveland sports and the Ohio State Buckeyes, and he spends too much time collecting sports memorabilia. Ben and Danica look forward to making Spokane their home, caring for their new neighbors, and exploring all the region has to offer before moving to Milwaukee, Wisconsin for a residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Medical College of Wisconsin.
David Graber, MD
Anesthesia
David was born and raised in Goshen, IN. He studied Environmental Science and Molecular Biology at Goshen College. He worked in various laboratory roles in Seattle and Portland before deciding to return to school at Western Michigan University School of Medicine. He and his wife of 5 years enjoy spending time with their 2 year old son and miniature poodle/schnauzer mix. He also likes to spend his free time cooking, traveling, hiking and playing disc golf. He is excited to return to the PNW for his internship before completing his Anesthesiology residency at Case Western MetroHealth in Cleveland, OH.
Zack Hansen, MD
Radiology
Zack is from Cedar City, Utah and went to school at the University of Utah. Zack met his wife in high school, and they current have two kids with a third on the way! Zack’s family’s dream is to settle down on property with an orchard, a large garden and some fun barnyard animals, including chickens.
When Zack is not practicing medicine, he likes to spend his time playing and watching sports, listening to sports talk radio, reading, eating all the fun food he can find and traveling with his high school sweetheart and their families.
Madeleine Isler, MD
Dermatology
Maddie was raised in a mountain cabin outside of Laramie, WY. She studied Molecular Biology at the University of Wyoming for her undergraduate education. Before medical school, she nurtured her adventurous side while living and working in Australia, New Zealand, and Jackson Hole, WY. She received her MD from the University of Washington and is excited to explore all that Eastern Washington has to offer. In her free time, she loves mountain biking, skiing, rafting, and hiking with her husband and rescue pup, Eddie. She also enjoys staying cozy while baking and crafting on cold weather days. After becoming a dermatologist, she is planning to return to Wyoming and help rural underserved populations while continuing to address barriers to healthcare.
Darby Moore, MD
Anesthesia
Darby is originally from Virginia before being recruited to Maryland to play for their Division I NCAA women’s soccer program. While at Maryland, she obtained a double degree in Kinesiology as well as Neurobiology and Physiology. She received her MD from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Outside of the hospital, she enjoys soccer, skiing, hiking, and frequently competes in endurance races with the most recent being an Ironman in Tasmania! Darby will return to Baltimore next year to continue her Anesthesiology residency training at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
Alyssa Quinn, MD
Dermatology
Alyssa spent the first part of her childhood in southeastern Idaho before moving to Kennewick, Washington. She completed her undergraduate education at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah and stayed in Utah for her medical education at Rocky Vista University. In her free time, Alyssa loves to mountain bike, play volleyball and pickleball, hike, cook, and spend time with her husband, Zach, and their 3-year-old lab, Millie. She is thrilled to be back in the Pacific Northwest for her internship. Following her intern year, Alyssa will head to the East Coast to complete her residency training in Dermatology at Lehigh Valley Health Network.
Erika Sasaki, MD
Anesthesia
Erika was raised in the suburbs of Bellevue, WA. She moved to the bay area for college, where she received her bachelor’s degree in biochemistry at Santa Clara University. She attended medical school at the University of Washington and spent the first two years of her pre-clinical training at the Spokane campus. She is excited to return to Spokane as a resident physician, where she can continue to work with the wonderful medical community and explore everything Eastern Washington has to offer! In her free time, Erika enjoys trying new restaurants, traveling with friends, watercoloring, and a recent find—crocheting. After her transitional year, she is thrilled to move back to the bay area to complete her residency training in anesthesiology at UC San Francisco.
